Cummins vs Perkins vs Mikano Generators | PowerFix
The brand on the canopy and the engine inside it aren’t always the same thing, and that one fact changes how you should compare maintenance cost.
Cummins vs Perkins vs Mikano is one of the most common comparisons Nigerian buyers make, and it hides a mix-up. Cummins and Perkins are engine manufacturers. Mikano is a generator set brand, and its premium range is built around Perkins engines. So before asking which one costs less to maintain, it helps to be clear about what you’re actually comparing. If you’re still deciding whether to buy at all, start with our guide to new vs used generator costs.

| Name | What it is | What that means for maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Cummins | Engine and generator set manufacturer, with sets from small commercial units up to very large industrial machines | Cummins engines, parts channel and, on many sets, Cummins’ own PowerCommand controllers. Large industrial models need technicians with hands-on experience on engines of that size |
| Perkins | UK diesel engine manufacturer, used in sets built by many assemblers across a wide size range | Wherever the set is assembled, the engine follows Perkins’ service schedule and parts |
| Mikano | Generator set brand and assembler. Its premium range uses Perkins engines, and it also sells a value range under its own YORC name | Engine maintenance follows the Perkins engine inside. Alternator, controller, breaker and enclosure parts depend on the specific Mikano model |
In practice, a Mikano Perkins set and a Perkins branded set share the same engine core. The parts that differ are the ones around it. Mikano’s published specifications for its Perkins range list Perkins engines, with alternators and controllers that vary by model, including COMAP digital controllers on the listings we reviewed.
Perkins is a long established name, with a history you can read about in this overview of Perkins Engines. The practical point for a buyer is simpler: ask for the engine model, not just the brand.
A bigger engine holds more oil and uses larger filters, so every service costs more. This is true whatever the badge says, and it’s the biggest line item on a heavy unit, as we show in our breakdown of what a 100kVA+ service visit costs.
A generator is only cheap to maintain if you can get its parts quickly at a fair price. What matters is whether parts for your exact model are on the shelf in Lagos, and whether you’re being offered genuine or compatible parts. Ask for part numbers and prices for the oil, fuel and air filters and the coolant before you buy, not after the first service.
Perkins engined sets, including many Mikano units, are very common in Lagos, which generally means more technicians have worked on them and diagnosis tends to be faster. Large industrial Cummins sets are a different situation. Fewer technicians have hands-on experience with engines of that size, which can affect both cost and lead time. You can see the kind of faults we deal with on these engines in our Cummins generator help guide.
The control panel decides how faults are read and what has to be replaced when something fails. Some manufacturers use their own proprietary controllers, others fit third party ones. Neither is automatically better, but you should know who in Lagos can diagnose the one on your set.
A set rated for standby duty and run as primary power wears faster than one rated for prime duty, whatever the brand. Caterpillar’s technical guide to generator set ratings explains the difference between standby, prime and continuous. Check which rating your set carries and compare it with how you actually use it.

This is the factor that outweighs brand most often. One example from our own work: a 40kVA Mikano generator at a biscuit plant in Ilupeju had gone 11 months without a certified service. It was smoking on startup, running hot and burning about 40% more fuel than normal. After a full diagnostic, new oil and filters, a coolant flush, injector timing verification and a load bank test, fuel consumption came back within 3% of the manufacturer’s baseline. The engine hadn’t failed. The maintenance had.
There’s no honest brand-wide answer, and anyone who gives you one without asking about the model, size and duty is guessing. Here is how we’d think about it instead:
For the cost side of the picture, track cost per operating hour over the life of the unit rather than the price of a single service.
We service all three. See our pages on Cummins generator repairs, Perkins generator repairs and Mikano generator repairs in Lagos. Manufacturers also publish their own guidance, for example Cummins’ generator maintenance information, which is worth reading alongside your model’s manual.
Whichever brand you run, the most useful number is how many hours the set has actually done since its last service. That tells you more about your maintenance cost than the badge does.
