Inside the PowerFix Digital Monitor | PowerFix
Every post on this blog ends the same way, run a free PowerFix Digital Monitor check. Here’s what that actually is, what it measures, and why it matters more than another quarterly service reminder.
If you’ve read our guides on generator maintenance in Lagos, what a service visit actually costs, or what to check when a generator won’t start, you’ve already seen the same theme come up again and again. Most generator problems in Lagos aren’t caused by bad equipment or bad technicians. They’re caused by not knowing the generator’s actual condition between scheduled visits. What we call the PowerFix Digital Monitor, the Generator Health Diagnostic tool under our Professional Diagnostic Tools section, exists specifically to close that gap.
Most facilities know one thing about their generator with confidence, when it was last serviced. What they don’t reliably know is how many hours it’s actually run since then, whether its load pattern is quietly building toward a wet stacking problem, or whether a fault is developing that hasn’t shown up as a visible symptom yet.
That gap is exactly why the standard 250 to 300 hour service interval fails so often in continuous-run Lagos installations. A facility running 12 hours a day burns through that interval in under a month, but a calendar-only maintenance schedule has no way of knowing that unless someone is actively tracking run-hours by hand. Almost nobody is.
Running a check takes the details you already know about your generator, its size, roughly how many hours a day it runs, when it was last serviced, and any symptoms you’ve noticed, and turns that into a clear picture of where the unit actually stands against the benchmarks that matter.
The output is a straightforward health score and a plain explanation of what’s driving it, not a wall of technical data you need a technician to interpret.
Real example
A 40kVA Mikano generator at a biscuit manufacturing plant in Ilupeju hadn’t had a certified service in 11 months. It was showing black smoke on startup, chronic overheating, and running 40% above normal fuel consumption, all symptoms that build gradually enough to become the new normal if nobody’s tracking the actual gap since the last service. A full diagnostic found the cause: oil and filters overdue, coolant system needing a flush, injector timing off. After the fix and a load bank test at 80% capacity, fuel consumption came back within 3% of OEM baseline and the black smoke was gone. The client enrolled in a quarterly AMC immediately afterward and has run five service cycles since with zero unplanned downtime. The starting point for all of it was simply knowing the gap had grown to 11 months, not the number on paper.
That scenario isn’t unusual, it’s close to the norm for near-continuous-run installations, which is exactly why condition monitoring, tracking a machine’s actual operating condition rather than assuming a fixed schedule applies, is standard practice in industrial maintenance generally. The Digital Monitor brings that same logic to a generator you can check from your phone in under two minutes.

If your generator is genuinely backup only, running a few hours a month during outages, a calendar-based schedule is a reasonable approximation of when service is actually due. But that describes a shrinking share of Lagos installations. For hospitals, manufacturing plants, telecom sites, and hospitality businesses where the generator runs most of the day, the gap between calendar time and actual run-hours grows every week, and it grows faster than most facility managers expect.
| Calendar-Only Scheduling | Digital Monitor Check | |
|---|---|---|
| What it tracks | Time since last visit | Actual run-hours since last visit |
| Catches overdue service | Only at the next scheduled date | As soon as the gap opens up |
| Wet stacking risk | Not tracked | Flagged based on load pattern |
| Time to check | N/A, passive | Under 2 minutes |
Have these on hand before you start, it makes the two minutes closer to accurate:
If you’re dealing with a no start situation right now, skip the check and go straight to the PowerFix homepage for an emergency callout, the diagnostic checklist for that is covered separately in our won’t start guide.
Two minutes is genuinely all it takes to find out where your generator actually stands, run-hours against the interval that matters, load pattern risk, and whether a symptom you’ve noticed connects to something worth a closer look.
